Cheshire Cats to receive relay baton at The Leigh Arms at Acton Bridge

CLASSIC motorbike enthusiasts are to take part in a baton rally next month to help celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Vintage Motorcycle Club.

The club was formed on April 28, 1946, with the aim of forming a motorcycle club for the owners of machines made before December 1930, and has a membership of over 15,000.

To mark the club’s 70th birthday an Anniversary Baton Relay Rally is taking place over three months, and will see members of club sections ride out around the country carrying a specially-designed baton.

Northwich and Middlewich residents and shoppers should keep their eyes peeled for a convoy of motorbikes taking part in the Cheshire part of the rally.

Malcolm Weaver, a member of the Cheshire Cats section of the club, will receive the baton from the Manchester and High Peak group at the Leigh Arms at Acton Bridge at about 10am on Saturday, May 7.

The baton will then be taken on a circuitous 50-mile route, escorted by at least 10 section members on their classic bikes, before being handed over to the Chester and North Wales section in the afternoon.

“The route we will be taking will be mainly B roads skirting Northwich and Middlewich,” said Cheshire Cats secretary Stephen Herbert.

“We will be stopping for lunch at The White Lion at Barthomley, and after lunch we will be escorting the baton on another similar route of 45 miles to arrive at the Plough Inn at Christleton, where we will hand over the baton in readiness for the next day’s journey.”

Stephen will be riding his 1959 Royal Enfield motorbike in the baton rally escort, which will include BSA, Ariel and Velocette machines, and will hopefully feature a pre-war Norton bike from 1935.

“The escort bikes will be a minimum of least 25 years old, and because we’re a vintage bike club some of the bikes will be much older,” said Stephen, from Cuddington.

“We will be riding in a line, and people may be able to spot us on the day by the black and white number plates and the fluorescent tabards we will be wearing featuring the Cheshire Cats logo.

“The baton rally is a very important event in the club’s history, and we also like any excuse to be able to get out on our bikes!”
