Visit to the 'Daniel Adamson' Steam tug – Tuesday 16th April.

16 Riders enjoyed a very interesting day out on Tuesday. Thanks must go to Theo Alberda for organising the visit and also to the volunteers on-board the 'Danny' for making us welcome on the day despite their busy maintenance schedule.

Mikes Tiddlers Trot - Sunday 14th April

Just a reminder that Mike Griffiths is leading a run on Sunday 14th especially designed for ‘Tiddlers’ (ideally 250 or under, or low powered larger machines).

This starts at Nantwich Lake carpark at 10:30.

Here’s the description from the VMCC Events list:

We will be taking a scenic route through the lanes of Cheshire and Staffordshire with a pub lunch . The route is quite gentle with only one hill of any note. (John Burgess sails up this on his 50cc bikes). The out-bound route is just over 30 miles and about 25 return. There is parking very close to the start for trailer carried bikes.  Motorcycles eligible are under 250cc and any bikes pre 1960. Modern bikes are not banned but be prepared for a slow run!

Here’s hoping for good weather and a great turnout!

Prees Heath to Llanuwchylln - Sunday 7th April

A non too promising Sunday morning and a short burst down the A49 to the Red Fox car park. We had planned on continuing down the A49 to Prees, however Cheshire West and Chester Highways had other ideas . So after a short detour through Bunbury we picked up the main road again and were on our way. Seven of us arrived at the allocated cafe, soon to be joined by the remainder of the group. In the past this event has coincided with the Big Breakfast bike meet. This year however this year we missed it but it seems that we weren't the only ones as there were an unusually large number of other motorcyclists at the truck stop.

After a short stop for tea or coffee (sausage baps for some!) in total 12 riders set of from the Truck Stop along the usual route past the always amusing 'Knokin Shop'. With the occasional pause on the route (I knew that last coffee was a bad idea) we headed for the stretch up the Tanat valley which was, as ever, beautiful . Once over the tops it was down alongside Bala Lake following the narrow gauge railway and on to the Eagles Inn, Llanuwchylln. Here we met up with the Cheshire and North Wales section on their opening run of the season, also a belated Alex. Lamb roast was the order of the day and after fine meal we turned our minds to the return leg. Topping up with fuel was high on the list and a group of us left to find a petrol station in Bala. Most of us managed not to put diesel in our tanks and Ross had chance to top up his gearbox with oil. Once Rob had pumped out his tank and refilled with the requisite fuel we were on or way via Corwen, Wrexham and the Broxton butty bar for a brew,

Another superb ride out in good company.

Visit to the 'Daniel Adamson' Steam tug – Tuesday 16th April.

Following on from the announcement at March club night, Theo has now arranged for a personal guided tour of the Daniel Adamson, currently berthed at Sutton Weaver. This has now been arranged to take place on Tuesday 16th April. The intention will be to meet at The Cock of Budworth (club night venue) and ride a short route together to Sutton Weaver. Little Brekkie to Llanuwchllyn – Sunday 7th April

This Sunday sees the famous Big Brekkie to Llanuwchllyn Run... but once again it’s the Little Brekkie to Llanuwchllyn Run ‘cos we guessed wrong when we planned our events last September... if you want to go to the Big Brekkie Bike Meet, don’t go this’s on 14th...

...but if you fancy joining us for a beautiful run up the Tanat valley from Prees Heath to Llanuwchllyn (south end of Bala), this is the one for you!

Phil is leading, leaving Prees Heath at 10:45. The good news about missing the BB is that it will be a whole lot easier to find each other! Meet at the north end of the access road at the T junction with Tilstock Rd (just south of The Raven pub) ready for the off at 10:45.

We’ll be meeting C&NW Section for lunch at the Eagles Inn, Llanuwchllyn then riding back on a different route.

All weather permitting as usual (and there are conflicting weather reports for Sunday)

Hope to see you on Sunday!

North Staffs Section Oatcake Run 2019

Sunday 24th March and the sunshine has arrived! Making our way from the meeting point in Holmes Chapel, 5 Section members enjoyed an easy ride over to Bradnop, via Congleton, Rushton and Leek. Phil Green led the way and we were joined by a further 2 members at the start. A good turnout of 40 riders in total for what is always a popular early season starter.

After a good chat and cuppa, we set out following an excellent route along mainly minor roads around the North Staffs moorlands. After 35 miles we ended up back at the village hall to be treated to Staffordshire oatcakes, cake and more tea. A big thanks to John Broadhurst and his helpers for putting on another great day

North Staffs Section Oatcake Run - Sunday 24th March 2019

Club Night March 21st 2019

Usual reminder that Thursday 21st March is this months Cheshire Cats Club Night and along with the usual raffle and chat we have a presentation by Bernard Dennis on “The Canal Duke” – the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater. You may remember Bernard’s fascinating talk on the History of the Longbow at one of last years meetings. I’m sure this one will live up to expectations and will be one not to miss.

Usual time and place :-

The Cock of Budworth, Warrington Road, Great Budworth, Northwich CW9 6HB

Wistanstow Bike Show Sunday 17th Marchikes Spring Run Sunday 10th March 2019

Another chance to battle the elements with our annual run to the Wistanstow Classic Bike Show in Craven Arms. Meet at Prees heath truck stop for a 10am departure. Phil Green will lead us the rest of the way. More details are on the calendar on our website. This run was snowed of last year! looks like the weather may be slightly more favourable this time.

Take a look at the Wistanstow Bike Show website for a flavour of the event -

The first run of the season successfully overcame the weather forecast and four hardy members enjoyed Mikes Spring run on the 10th March. Below is Mikes report and the photos are courtesy of Les Hodgkinson.

Mikes Spring Run Sunday 10th March 2019

Had four of us on the Spring ride to-day and had a nice sunny ride-out. Went down one or two interesting lanes with some 'Cheshire dual carriageway' also a bit of the same in Shropshire. We travelled from Nantwich via Shavington Park to Market Drayton . Then on to Newport to follow a 'B' road to Wem. Then winding through the lanes to finish at the Truck stop at Prees Heath. As it was a tad on the windy and chilly side we decided that after 50 miles we would not do the afternoons planned 40 miles and had a nice chat and meandered home. My A7 decided to be a bit daft on the way back and refused to rev. Cleared after 1/2 mile slow riding and on returning home I found the filter to the carb partially blocked . All cleared now and ready for the off again. Thanks to Alan Crutchley, Les Hodgkinson and first timer and new member Andy Royle for facing the weather.....I must admit when getting up this morning I was a bit doubtful if we would be going but in South Cheshire at 10-15 the cloud broke for a nice fresh , windy day to ride in . We kept the pace down so as not too get the wind chill factor. Some roads had quite a bit of water lying across but not enough to deter us lads. Thanks to all for turning out . I for one certainly enjoyed the ride . Yes washed my bike when I got home.....

Club Night – February 2019

February’s ClubNight (21st February at the Cock@Budworth) will feature our

 Annual Bring ‘n Buy Auction

run by Derek Thom as usual. This year’s event promises to be the best ever – we’re advertising it far and wide and Derek will be in fine voice as usual, and dressed for his part as The Greatest Showman!

The flyer has some details for your perusal – please share this with any friends/relatives/enemies etc as appropriate – who knows, they may have something to bring or want to buy…

The main reason for the advance warning is to give you chance to

clear out your bike shed and have a good supply of Stuff To Sell!

Remember: that Treble Thrunge-pin you have gathering dust under the bench may be the very thing someone needs to complete their winter project. Conversely, that Sprocket-wobbler you’ve been looking for all year may turn up at the Bring ‘n Buy at a special knock-down price.

(Derek tells me you have to buy now before he puts the price up after Brexit!).

More details on the flyer; please act now to make this event a success!

A Couple of reminders and announcements :-

  • It’s Clubnight NEXT Thursday (17th January).  Don’t go to the Rugby Club ‘cos we’ve moved to the Cock at Budworth. Details on the website, but it’s just off the A559 near Great Budworth.  Usual time, 7:30 for 8:00
This month being January means it’s our AGM.  According to my records, it’s our 6th AGM – how did that happen…???!!!
This is your opportunity to volunteer for stuff, sack the existing Committee, trigger Brexit and all manner of interesting stuff! (OK forget the Brexit bit, that’s not true…!) No other activities planned for this month’s meeting so it gives us time to settle into our new ‘Home’ with a couple of drinks and a chat etc
  • For those of you with Tiddlers (smaller capacity bikes), there will be two runs specifically for you this year.  Bob Moon is planning one for September (details in the VMCC Events Guide booklet) and Mike Griffiths is planning one earlier in the year, probably late April.  Should be a nice change!
  • Talking of VMCC Events Guides, I handed them out at the Christmas Meal, but this exhausted the allocation supplied by VMCC HQ.  The good news is that I’ve managed to get more which I’ll have at Clubnight so come along and claim your copy!
  • I’ve been advised by Acorns Motorcycle Club about two Motorcycle Scrambles locally – in May and July.  Information sheet below so if you fancy getting muddy, these could be for you!

  • On 20th April (Easter Saturday), Blackpool & District Section are holding a get-together at Ghost Bikes in Preston.  If you fancy a trip north, let me know and I’ll supply details…
